Sidney Monroe VanZandt

July 21, 1933 ~ January 22, 2022 (age 88)

Obituary

Sidney Monroe VanZandt was born on July 21st, 1933, in Carter, Oklahoma to GB (Doodle) and Bonnie VanZandt. He went to be with our Lord on January 22nd in Edmond, Oklahoma with his wife Lucy and daughter Sidney by his side. He was the oldest of 5 brothers, Hollis, Danny, Calvin and GB (Van). He had a great sense of humor and was always joking around. Sid graduated from Ocina High School in 1951 and attended one semester at Southwestern Oklahoma University. He then left school to join the United States Air Force, reaching the rank of Staff Sargent before an honorable discharge in 1960. Part of Sid’s service had him stationed in London England. Upon returning stateside, he had three boys Terry VanZandt in ’56, Stephen (VanZandt) O’Grady in ‘57 and Michael (VanZandt) O’Grady in ’58.

Sid was a peanut farmer for several years prior to a 20 year commercial minnow dealer career. He had a love for everything outdoors, from hunting and fishing to water skiing. Friends often took great pride if they could ever throw him from his skis behind the boat. In 1974 he met Lucia Guzman at a local restaurant. A short time later, they were married on October 12th, 1974, in Sayre, OK, and remained so for 47+ years. Lucy worked side by side with Sid in all their ventures, of which she has the fondest memories of their adventures together. In 1988 they had their daughter Sidney Micheal VanZandt.  Sidney was an All-State softball player, Valedictorian of her high school class and graduated with a Biology degree from UCO in 2011. Sid and Lucy moved to Edmond, OK, in 2012 to be close to Sidney and her new husband Wes Schumacher. Sid enjoyed planting fruit trees, squirrel “hunting”, feeding the birds, sneaking candy to his grandsons and spending time outdoors at their Edmond residence.

Sid is preceded in death by his parents Doodle and Bonnie, as well as his brothers Hollis and Danny. He is survived by his loving wife Lucy, daughter Sidney and her husband Wes, Grandsons Eli James(4) and Brooks Monroe(2), brother Calvin and his wife Vicki, brother Van and his wife Marianne, sons Terry, Steve and Mike, along with 6 grandkids and 5 great-grandkids from Steve and Mike’s families.

Services will be held at Rose Chapel Funeral Home in Sayre, OK at 1 PM on Thursday January, 27, 2022. Graveside services will follow at Willow Cemetery in Willow, OK.
